As some of you may know, although my recreation mainly
consists of eating and sleeping, I do still find time for other pursuits
including following Surrey County Cricket Club who play cricket at their
home grounds of Kennington Oval and Guildford. I don't usually go myself,
but my friends go and give me reports of the matches. This season Surrey
led the County Championship for all but four weeks of the season and looked
as though they were at least going to be second or third (I never expect
Surrey to actually WIN anything because of past disappointments)
but in the end they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet
again and achieved Fifth place. Prize money is -of course- for the top
Four places. On the left is a picture of Phil looking very glum at the
last match of the season against Leicestershire. (Click on any picture
for a larger version) Leicester won the toss, scored 585 for 6 declared
in their first innings and then bowled Surrey out twice, for 146 and 228,
to win by an innings and 211 runs. This picture was taken at tea on the
third day when Surrey were 149 for 8 in their second innings. As you will
see he is wearing a Green Bay Packers
tie that was given to him by Colin Lukens, a "Cheesehead" as
the supporters are called, who worked in the University Tavern earlier
this year. I liked this tie so much that I borrowed it, as you can see
in the photo on the right!
