History
As some of you may know Birkbeck College did not do so
well in University Challenge last year, in fact they got the lowest score
ever recorded(since beaten in this years contest) and at the halfway stage
the score was Manchester University 200 Birkbeck
College -(minus) 10, luckily, with 10 minutes left they recorded their
first correct answer, to a roar of relief from the audience. As it was
the final score is down for all to read as
Manchester University 360 Birkbeck College 40
But,
enough of last years troubles, here are the scintillating brains packed
into this years team.(click on the picture to view a full-sized
image) It so happens I accompanied one of them -Catherine, in the front-
to Manchester where the shows are recorded. Funny that it was Manchester
University last year that won so well! I wanted to assist in any way I
could, so here 
you
can see me on the telephone trying to locate some abstruse reference material
for the members of the team, as well as four large Doners and a slab of
beer. It's not all hard work though and when I found a round window, I
was very pleased, since as you will know if you have perused my other pages,
I am a matelot and this window 
reminded
me of a porthole, so I spent happy hours sitting in it dozing and dreaming
of my life at sea. Since University Challenge no longer allows mascots
-although I clearly would not allow myself to be thought of in that capacity-
I had to wait in my room for Catherine to come back when she had finished.
Here
you see me waiting for her chauffered limousine to arrive after the filming.

These pictures show the aftermath of the celebration
after our victory over Nottingham University; our little wonky friend would
not let go of the cork from one
of the bottles of champagne. As you see, we had to communicate the
news to all our colleagues and still wonky had the cork in his arms! (Larger

First Round
I am pleased to say that Birkbeck College beat The University
of Wales at Cardiff in the first round.
The score was 245 - 195
Second Round
I am very pleased to say that Birkbeck College beat Robinson
College, Cambridge in the second round.
The score was 215 - 175
Quarter-Final
I am extremely pleased to say that Birkbeck College beat
the University of Edinburgh in the Quarter-Final.
The score was 275 - 205
Semi-Final
I am jubilant in proclaiming that Birkbeck College beat
Nottingham University in the Semi-Final.
The score was 240 - 205
Final
I am sad to announce that Birkbeck College lost to Magdalen
College, Oxford in the Final.
The score was 225 - 195
